EMPIRE RIFLE MEETING.
NEW ZEALAND FORCED TO FORFEIT. WELLINGTON, May 14. The chairman of the National Rifle Association (Mr L. Marshall) states that it has been found impossible to secure a team to Zealand at the Empire rifle meeting in July next. The grant which was kindly offered by the Government and appreciated by the association was, he said, £IOOO. As the cost of each man would run well into three figures, even with the grant and apart from lost pay, the majority of those who had been asked found that they could not afford to go. As those who were unable to make the trip comprised Simmonds, Neilson, West, Roots, Masefield, Croxton, L. Loveday, Hunt, James, Feast, E. Ballinger. 11. Donald, Blackwood, and Duncan, it was obvious, said Mr Marshall, that any team going would not be a truly representative one. The only men prepared to accept positions in the team were Nichol, Piper, Veaie, Gilliek, Bolton, and Mills. Disappointment is naturally felt in rifle shooting circles.
