OAAIARU MARKETS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) OAMARU, May 10. Though feed is not yet thoroughly assured, there has been a fair amount of movement in sheep, the sales by private treaty including some lines of good dimensions. The weekly market sale did not augur well for a fain yarding of sheep, which met with a slow sale, while none of the fat wethers offered reached vendors’ views as to values. The best of the fat ewes brought 25s 9d, and the rest, which were mostly of indifferent quality, ranged down to 16s 9d. Fat lambs met with a °ood sale, the best fetching 32s 6d, while lighter sorts ranged down to 21s. A line of mixed two, four, and six-toothed ewes realised 345, but the rest were of the full and failing-mouthed order, and went at 14s down to 7s 2d. The greatest amount of business has been done by private treaty. A good demand exists for good young breeding ewes, but there are no sellers of that class of sheep, and the ewes offering are mostly of indifferent description. The best sale of the week was one of 300 soundmouthed halfbred ewes at 30s, though in point of numbers it was exceeded by a lme of 530 threequarterbred ewe lambs and 500 Corriedale ewe hoggets, the price in each instance being 275.

Other sales reported are as follows ■ Sound-mouthed ewes in low condition, 93s 6d; full and failing-mouthed ewes, ]4s to 15s: failing-mouthed ewes, los; failing - and broken-mouthed ewes, 12s Gd; ewe lambs, from 22s 6d to 265; wether lambs in a line of 200, 19s 6d: small mixed-sex iambs, 19« 6d; eight-tooth fat wethers, 37s 6d; twotooth fat wethers, 31s 6d.. Sales on the per lb basis have been made of fat lambs at 10|d and IOJd and of fat wethers at 7d.

There is still only a modest amount of business doing in cattle, and that chiefly in butchers’ animals. At the weekly market there was a larger offering than usual of fat cattle, but the quality was generally indifferent, small steers going at £5 os, a heifer at £4 153, and cows at anything from £4 10s down to £1 10s. By private treaty a line of 40 good fat bullocks realised £l2 10s, and

lighter fat steers £9. Dairy cows just at profit meet with a fair sale. At the regular market these brought from £7 2s 6d to £8 10s, but privately sales have been made at from £8 10s to £lO. Other cows command little respect, and prices for medium sort-9 have ranged from £4 to £5, while aged cows have been quitted at £2 to £3, and spring calving second and third calvers have been Eold at from £3 to £4. Outside of mixed-sex yearlings at 20s and calves at from 10s to 15s, sales of other cattle have been confined to pollers and poor stuff.

A net profit of £8879 in the trading account is disclosed in the balance sheet of Donaghy's Rope and Twine Company for the year ended March 31 last. This compares with £14,782, the net profit in the previous year. The decrease of £5903 is due to the expansion of working expenses, which increased by £5541. To the net profit on trading account of £8879 must be added interest £922; £3B, surplus on sale of Government stock; and £2031 brought forward from the previous year; making a total of £11,871. From this must be deducted £IB7O written off for depreciation, £440 debenture interest, and £l5O for ehares in the New Zealand and South. Seas Exhibition Company, leaving £9411 to be dealt with, as compared with £9555 in the preceding year, when £2600 was wiitten off for depreciation. The dividend of 8 per cent, and bonus of 2 per cent., which are the same as was paid last year, absorb £3525, to the reserve fund has been added £3OOO, and there remains to be carried forward £2886. TAUPIRI COAL MINES (LTD.). The twenty-fifth annual report of the Taupiri Coal Mines (Ltd.) states that the profit for the year after making allowance for depreciation was £11,628, to which has to be added the balance (£2098) from the previous year. Dividends amounting, to £I6OO have been paid on preference shares, and the directors recommend a dividend of Is 6d a share, amounting to £9075, and the transfer of £IOOO to the accident reserve fund, leaving £2051 to be carried forward. Dividends in the last three years have been 8 per cent, on preference and 7£ per cent, on ordinary shares. Against last year’s profits of £11,628 may be set those for the two previous years, £12,600 and £13,747 respectively. With this year’s addition the accident reserve stands at- £IOOO. The income tax reserve remains at £IO,OOO. BELGIAN IMPORTS TO CANADA. Mr G. L. Denniston, Belgian Consul, has received from the Consul-general in Sydney the intimation that, after negotiations extending over some months, the Canadian Government has granted to Belgian imports the advantage of the intermediate tariff. Canada possesses three different tariffs —a preferential tariff for British goods, an intermediate tariff applicable to countries to which Canada reserves a favourable treatment, and a general tariff, the highest applicable to goods originated from countries with which Canada has no treaty of commerce. By the transference of Belgian goods from the general to the intermediate tariff, the Caradian Government recognises the extremely liberal treatment which Canadian goods have always received of their entry into Belgium. It constitutes a serious step towards a satisfactory result of the continuation of the negotiations at Ottawa for I the conclusion of a treaty of commerce be- ] tween the Belgo-Luxembourgeose Economic Union and Canada.
