REARING OF PHEASANTS.

AUCKLAND. March 25. At a meeting of the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society some discussion ensued upon the quostion of the liberation of young pheaaants. Several members urged that no birds should be freed until the close of the shooting season. It was asserted that the entire batch of pheasants would fall to sportsmen within a few weeks if they were liberated at present. A proposal that young pheasants should be farmed out for private rearing was advanced by one member, who said that the society oould arrange to supply farmers with eggs and chickens, and then buy back the pheasants when they had matured. The suggestion was supported by several others, who agreed that the scheme would ensure a supply of several thousands of pheasants each year. The Chairman explained that the scheme would not be practicable unless the individuals who undertook to rear the birds had expert knowledge. It was decided to defer further consideration and to communicate with sub-societies, asking that the liberation of young birds be postponed until the oloae of the snooting season.
