MAIN HIGHWAYS.
CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE WORK. (Fbom Ooh Own Correspond ent. ) WELLINGTON. August 21. Tho first appropriation of Government funds for the purposes of construction and maintenance of ma n highways is contained in the Finance Bill, which authorises the payment of such sums as may be requires, not less in the aggregate than £35.000, to be paid from the Consolidated Fund to the main highways fund for the year commencing on April 1 next. Authority is also sought m the Bill to pay such sums as may be required from the Public Works Fund to the construction fund of the mam highways account. The unexpended appropriations for roads at March 31 next may be also so transferred. The amount to be transferred from the Public Works Fund to the construction fund of the highways account under the two preceding items shall not be less in the aggregate than £200,000, and tho Minister cf Public Works may, in addition, transfer to the construction fund of the main highways account in any year after March 31, 1924, any amounts appropriated for the preceding financial year for roads which, before the date of such, transfer, had been declared to be main highways if such moneys had not been expended at March 31, 1924.
