It is claimed that the Ashburton County grows about one-fifth of the total amount of wheat produced in New Zealand each | year. That area between the Rakaia | River (Mid-Canterbury) and the borders of I the Marlborough Province has only nnproxi- | mately 20,000 more acres in wheat as a | rule than the Ashburton County can boast. There is every indication, however, that there will be a groat falling-off in the production of wheat, in the Ashburton district this year. It is thouorht the decrease will be something approaching one third. This, if correct., will be due to adverse weather conditions for sowing, and. as the farmers state, the fact (hat it cannot be grown profitably at the present returns. Many farmers consider the outlook for oat prices is not good.
