DISEASE IN APPLES.
WELLINGTON, July 16. Mr Waters, Government biologist, commenting on the recent report that apples in cases shipped to London had brown heart, explains that his investigations showed that the disease was due in part to lack of oxygen, but susceptibility increased rapidly with every degree of ripeness, so that a few mature fruit in a case might be affected and others would escape. Among apples closeness of the boards and the nature of the wrapping were likalj to affect conditions in favour of disease. Australian apples were less liable, because the temperatures were rapidly lowered and the consumption of oxygen by the fruit was promptly reduced. Ventilation in the May ships was greatly improved, and the apples shipped were in a strikingly immature condition.
