CRUELTY TO A CHILD
SIX WEEKS’ IMPRISONMENT’. WELLINGTON July 13. For cruelty to a two-year-old child, George Louis Bertram to-day was sentenced to six Weeks’ imprisonment with hard labour for ill-treating a baby girl, his stepdaughter. Both the man and a woman (mother of the girl) were charged, but the evidence against the latter was not c-oneidered strong enough for a conviction. At Paekakariki, where the parties resided, the child was found lying On the floor in a whare, and was conveyed to the city by two residents. Evidence was given that, the residents saw the child being thrashed while naked, and afterwards it was taken to a tap, where it could ho hoard screaming. It was then given a second thrashing. The female accused said she was in a state of nervous hysteria, and had no intention of hurting the child.
