OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Otago Boxing Association’s annual championships were decided in the King’s Theatre on the I7th before a very large audience. Mr F. J. Campbell was master of ceremonies, Mr H. L. Humphreys referee. and Messrs D. M. Paterson and J. Gawne judges. Three three-minute rounds were fought. FLY-WEIGHTS. John Leckie 7.5 beat P. Lemon 7.7. Final. John Leckie beat S. Campbell 7.8. Leckie knocked out his opponent halfway through the first round with a right swing to the head. FEATHER WEIGHTS. W. Rowe 3.12 beat Colin Campbell 8.7. R. Fulcher 8.13 beat W. Leckie 8.13. Final. Fulcher beat Rowe LIGHT-WEIGHTS. L. Drew 9 7 beat J. Paul 10.0. A. George 9.12 beat A. Denniston 9.2. Semi-final. George 9.12 beat A. Argyll (Ashburton) 9.15. Final. George beat Drew. George was declared the winner amidst loud applause, but he could not have won by many points. He is certainly one of the gamest youths ever seen in a boxing ring in Dunedin. WELTER-WEIGHTS. A. Scotland scored 1043 points, Ireland 1028, Canada 1025, and Wales 945. . LAWN TENNIS. FRANCE DEFEATS SWITZERLAND. PARIS, July 16. France beat Switzerland in the Davis Cup contest by three matches to two. In the remaining Singles, Blandly (France) beat ' Martin (Switzerland), 7 —5, 6 —3, 6— 2; Cochet (France) beat Aeschilman (Switzerland) 1 6 6—3, 6—3, 5—7, 6—4. THE EUROPEAN FINAL. PARIS, July 17. The European final of the Davis Cup between Spain and Fiance will begin at Deauville on July 28. The winning team will then go to America.*'

SUNDAY PLAY SANCTIONED. NEW YORK, July 16. The Davis Cup match between Australia and Hawaii will be played at Forest Hills on July 27, 28, and 29, thus making the last day s play on S-nday. The Australians agreed to this after consulting the Australian authorities, who were reluctant, but the}’ were influenced by the fact that better gate receipts would be assured. Both teams are practising B‘eadily. Anderson and Hawkes are expected to be the Australian team.—A. and N.Z. Cable. SYDNEY, July 18. With reference to the Davis Cup and Sunday play, Mr Colquhoun, chairman of the council of the Lawn Tennis Association, explains that after the association had cabled its objection to Sunday play Anderson replied that the cable had reached him too late, and that meantime arrangements had been made to play the match on Sunday. It was too late to cancel the arrangement, said Mr Colquhoun, but the council had instructed Anderson that no subsequent arrangements were to be made for Sundav play; also that members were to carry out the instructions of the council. BRITISH TEAM FOR AUSTRALIA. LONDON, July 20. The Lawn Tennis Association is favourable in regard to the Australian invitation to a British team. TILDEN DRAMATICALLY DEFEATED. On July 9, at Glencoe, Manuel Alonso (Spain) sensationally defeated Tilden, winning the Illinois Singles Championship, the sets being B—6, ll—l 3, 6—3, 6—l. This is the first time Tilden lias been defeated by a European. Previously he has been beaten on several occasions by Americans and Australians. The match ended dramatically. Alonso served to Tilden, and the latter’s return hit the net. Alonso exclaimed, ‘‘lt was a net ball; I must serve again.” The linesman ruled against the Spaniard, who threw the balls and his racquet on to the ground. The umpire intervened, and allowed a re-play. Alonso, however, refused to take advantage of this, and deliberately hit two services out of the court, giving a point to Tilden. Americau courtesy, as demonstrated by Tilden, proved the equal of Castilian, and Tilden purposely played the next two services into the gallery. The match ended with the spectators gasping. COURSING. VICTORIAN WATERLOO CUP. MELBOURNE, July 22. In the Victorian Waterloo Cup Vanity Verse and Unio were left in the final. After going 50 yards Vanity Verse stopped ancUlay down, apparently seriously hurt, and was thereupon withdrawn.
