RESEARCH IN MEDICINE
THE BEIT FELLOWSHIP. AWARDED TO DR 0. S. HICKS. A London Press Association message received on Thursday stated that Dr Cedric S. Hicks, M.Sc., M. 8.. Ch.B., of the Otago University, had been awarded the Beit Research Fellowship in Medicine. The Beit Research Fellowships were founded in 1909 by Mr Otto Beit as a memorial to his brother, Mr Alfred Beit. Ihe Fellowship won by Dr Hicks was awarded to promote the advancement by research in medicine and the allied sciences in relation to medicine. Dr Hicks, who is the first New' Zealander lo win a Beit Research Fellowship, lias had a very successful career. After attending the Otago Boys’ High School he entered the Otago University, where, during his medical course, he did exceptionally He took his M.Sc. in 1915, and was appointed assistant to Dr Drennan, Professor of Pathology, at the beginning of this year. He has been a Government analyst for some years. Dr Hicks has conducted researches on various chemical lines, and, at the present time, is largely engaged on applied chemistry in relationship to pathology and clinical medicine. During the Great War his ability as an analyst resulted in his being appointed to assist Dr Inglis, Professor of Chemistry at the Otago University, in the manufacture of Chloramine T., which is largely used for antiseptic purposes. Dr Hicks is the eldest son of the late Mr G. 11. Hicks, of Ravensbourne, who "as a member of ihe literary staff of the Otago Daily Times for same years, and who was previously connected with the Otago Witness.
