LIQUOR IN KING COUNTRY.
OPPOSITION BY MAORIS. WELLINGTON, July 12. Opposition to licenses being granted for the sale of alcoholic liquor in the King Country was voiced by a deputation of Natives which waited on the Prime Minister to-dav. The members of the deputation included Messrs Ngata, Isitt-, Tau Henare, Uru, Harris, and J. M. Dickson’ M.P.’s, the Hon. Wirimu Rikihana, M.L.C. Sir Maui Pomare introduced the deputation.
One speaker stated that 90 per cent, of the younger generation of Maoris in the King Country did not touch liquor, and only 10 per cent. did. If the European petition were granted the figures might be reversed.
Mr Massey said the petition would receive due and proper consideration by a committee of the House and by the House itself. The proposals in regard to a Licensing Bill had not yet taken shape, but it was practically certain that a Bill would he before Parliament this session. He could not promise that it- would become law this year, the reason being that licensing legislation was very contentious.
