PRINCESS MAUD ENCASED,
LONDON, June 10. The engagement of Princess Maud to the eldest son of the Earl of Southesk is announced. June 11. Princess Maud’s engagement was the result of her fondness for outdoor HighI land sports. She frequently met Lord | Carnegie when fishing. Princess Maud i holds the record for killing the biggest salmon ever taken in the River Dee. Since Lord Carnegie returned from India, where he was Lord Chelmsford’s aide ae camp, he has seen much of the Princess. She was brought up in the utmost simplicity, and was only allowed to share one maid with her sister until Princess Alexandra married Prince Arthur of Connaught. Princess Maud ie an excellent linguist, speaking and Writing French, Gorman, and Italian fluently. A Court circular issued to-day contains the following announcement: “It is with great pleasure that the King announces the betrothal of his niece. Princess Maud, second daughter of the Princess Royal and the late Duke of Fife, to Lord Carnegie, captain in the Scots Guards, and eldest son of the Earl and Countess of Southesk, to which union his Majesty gladly gives his assent.” The Princess Royal, Princess Maud, and Lord Carnegie visited their Majesties at Buckingham Palace this afternoon. Princess Maud. who is 20 years of age, is the second daughter of the Princess ; Royal and the late Duke of Fife. Lord ! Southesk’s eldest son is Lord Carnegie, j He is in his twenty-first year.
