AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By

Digger.

As is usually the case after a. big meeting, the tracks arc fairly quiet at present. Oakleigli failed to run prominent at Eilerslie, the heavy state, of the track being against a small horse carrying big weights. The St. Amans gelding is likely to make amends before the jumping season closes. Ppamii is being kept going, and will probably race at Wellington. He appears to have benefited by the two races he had at Eilerslie.. One of the easiest victories registered at Eilerslie was that of Kahikatea in the Carbine Piate. The three-vear-old son of Wormwood and Kocya should be heard o-f again during the winter. Rata showed a lot of pace in his races, but failed to stay on. He should turn out a useful sprinter next season. . Usually there are some promising jumpers among the hunters. Young Thurnham, Kauri Park, and Glenotus are a trio competed in the, hunters’ events at E del slie liicely to be seen to advantagem much better company. Prior to the A.R.C. Winter meeting not mug- was doing better work on the track than Loyal Irish and Lady Ridicule, but the pair failed to run prominently. The latter shows a great turn of speed, but generally fails to reproduce it in her races. Evidently Arch Salute does not like the Eilerslie course, as he has always failed when raced at headquarters. The Marble Arch gelding is very well at present, and may do belter at AVe-Iling't.on. Miss Melva was very fit at Eilerslie, but tailed to act in the heavy going. The best has n«t yet been seen of the Spalpeen mare over hurdles. As a result of being kicked while at the post m the Great Northern Hurdle Race it was considered advisable to destrov Oranga tayff Saturday. The loss of Oranga would be a severe one for Mr J. Paterson, a? the son otf Royal Sou t showed great promise over hurdles. Earlier in the season he registered four consecutive wins over hurdles. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND NAPIER PARK RACES. NEW ZEALAND TROTTING ASSOCIATION. APPLICATION FOR TOTALISATOR LICENSES. CHRISTCHURCH, June 12. At the monthly meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association, ihe Westland Trotting Club wrote requesting a special totalisator license in connection with tlie Westland Diamond Jubilee Exhibition. It was decided to reply that this was a matter tor the conference, the executive of which is already making inquiries into the matter. A similar reply was authorised to be sent to the Wyndham Trotting Club, which had made a similar request. In view of the fact that most, of the members of the board will be in Wellington on Monday, July 9. it was decided to hold the next ordinary meeting of the board in Wellington on that day. A JOCKEY'S APPEAL. AUCKLAND, June 15. The Auckland District Committee heard the appeal of R. Hunt against ihe decision of the Auckland Racing Club stewards in suspending him for six months for deliberate interference with Pittsworth in the Great Northern Steeplechase. The committee, in view of the fresh evidence tendered, particularly as to the boring habits of Vociferate, and of the fact that Hunt was not warned, and was an entire stranger to the horse, finds Hunt not guilty of deliberately interfering, but guilty of a serious error of judgment in not straightening his horse when interference became imminent. The committee feels that the penalty of suspension until July 16 next will meet the case, and therefore upholds the appeal to this extent. The decision of the stewards in awarding Pittsworth third place was confirmed. DOPING. LONDON, June 15. The Jockey Club has inquired into the management of the horses belonging to a certain owner. It was decided that a hypodermic injection had been administered to a horse at the Catterick autumn meeting. The man who administered the drug was warned off the turf, and the owner was advised to exercise closer supervision over his horses.—A. and N Z Cable. CANTERBURY JOGKEy CLUB.
