DUNEDIN FANCIERS’ CLUB

ANNUAL SHOW.

Tho annual show of poultry, pigeons, canaries, dogs, cats, and children’s pets held under the auspices of the Dunedin Fanciers’ Club was opened on Thursday morning, and was fairly well patronised during the day. and largely visited in the evening. It is being held in the Brydone Hall, which met all requirements. Trie entries are a little ahead of those of last year. The dogs are well ahead and canaries show a considerable advance. Poultry, pigeons, and pets are up to tile usual standard. The judges were Mr C. 11. Cunningham, assisted by Mr J. J. Jowsey (utility poultry), Mr H. Brownlie (bantams), and Mr E. t). Reilly (other poultry sections), Mr R. Bankshaw (fancy pigeons), Mr A. C. Gerard (homers), Mr S. B. Gerrie (canaries), and Mr H. S. Kyle (dogs). The judging was got- through with a fair degree of expedition, and apparently gave satisfaction. While all the officials assisted materially in making the opening day a .success the names of Mr T. A. Brown, superintendent of the show; Mr J. R. Wilson, supervisor of the dog section; Mu- W. Esquilant, president of the Club; and Mr E. S. Wilson, the secretary, may be specially mentioned. POULTRY. The quality of the fowls in the utility section was very satisfactory taken all round, the outstanding features being met with in the white Leghorn pullets, black Minorcas and black Orpingtons. The white top Leghorns were a fair class. PIGEONS. In Homing pigeons there were some exceptionally good birds, especially amongst those exhibited by Mr Strang, of Invercargill. There were some good birds from this source, and Mr Strang was the principal winner. The Dunedin birds showed n falling off in quality in many instances. Mr Esquilant has some very nice birds showing. Competition was very keen, and Hot much separated the placed birds in the Homing section. It is stated that in this section the birds compare more than favourably with those seen at the recent show at Christchurch. DOG*. There was an exceptionally fine entry of dogs, the number being well ahead of that of any previous year. ” Spaniels and terriers predominated, though there wag also a fair number of pets of the toy variety, chiefly Pomeranians and pugs. The deer hounds were a very attractive trio, and the one pointer on exhibition was also a particularly fine specimen Although here was no competition in the rough-coated collie class. Mrs A. Smellie’s dog (Bob) was easily deserving of the prize for the best dog or bitch. CANARIES. The entries for the canary section exceeded all expectations, and altogether the standard of biid on exhibition has risen very appreciably from that of the preceding years. The champion, a Norwich buff, belonged to Mr A. Oursey, and was a really magnificent bird, outclassing the others by a long wav. There was also a noticeable improvement in Yorkshires, the winner of this class being Mr J. Jenkins. Ttie following is the prize list -in the principal classes: — POULTRY. Fancy Bheeds.
