THE OTIRA TUNEL.

CHRISTCHURCH, June 6. So far as the Public Works Department is concerned the Otira tunnel should he able to carry traffic in a week. The first main electric locomotive will be tested under full power to-morrow. The electric signalling system is complete between Otira and Bealey. At the end of the tunnel some overhead wiring is still required. At the stations the biggest cause of delay •in the opening of the tunnel to traffic will be the training of the drivers of the electric locomotives. This training has not been begun yet. It will take a month. Small goods trains are being used first.
