CLAIM BY THE RAILWAY DEPARTMENT.

t CHRISTCHURCH, .Tune 9 Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M., gave judgment to-day denying the right of the Railway Department to claim freight and other charges on goods landed at Lyttelton for Lyttelton consignees, and sent to Christchurch for sorting. The claim was one which the Railway Department made again;! Forbes and Co., Lyttelton, for £26 7s Id. railage, sorting, and storage charges in respect to 425 bundles of iron ex Woodarra, and £6 19s s<l. railage, etc, on 222 bundles of pipes ex Katina. The Magistrate said that the individual detention notices were not given by Forbes and Co. in respect to the goods, and they relied on the general notice given to the department.
