FIRES.
ELTHAM, June 4. A boardinghouse of 17 rooms in Mountain road, Eltham, was totally destroyed b- fire at 3 o’clock this morning. The building was occupied by Mr George Allenden. The insurances were £9OO on the building and £SOO on the furniture. Extensive damage was done on Thursday to the stock on the premises of Messrs J. Wren and Co. (Ltd.), painters, in Princes street south through a fire breaking out in the top flat of the building. The City Fire Brigade was on the scene without delay, and succeeded in suppressing the outbreak by 1.50 p.m. —about 35 minutes after it occurred. Tire damage is expected to amount to some thousands of pounds, as, in addition to the loss of stock, the roof has been burned somewhat. The stock was insured with the following companies:—British Dominions, £750 and £250: Union, £850: United, £700; Southern Union, £500: Northern, £400 : Home, £300; Alliance, £2OO. The insurances on the building are: —Southern Union. £500; New Zealand, £385; Alliance, £300; Phoenix, £300; British Dominions, £2OO.
