POLICE COURT CASES.
AUCKLAND, June 1. A fine of £2O on each of two charges of having entered into bets on a ho-rse race at totalisator odds was imposed on Edward Dyers in the Police Court to-day. Two constables stated that they made bets with the accused in au hotel. Another opium case before the Dolica Court was that of Ah long, who was lined £SO for having been found in possession of opium in forms suitable lor smoking. The defence was that Ah Tong, who was recently fined heavily for being in possession of opium, was endeavouring to break himself off the habit. A charge against another Chinese of permitting smoking was dismissed, as a document was produced purporting to be a transfer of the premises to Ah Tong. As the result of a raid in July last Mong Sun, a Chinese, was fined £lO for permitting a house, described as the Chinese Club, being used as a common gaming house. He was one of the trustees ox the club, in which hair.g gow was being played when the police raided it. About 20 other Chinese were fined £1 for being on tho premises. Tho cases had been adjourned pending an appeal by another Chinese against conviction, the appeal being dropped. PALMERSTON NORTH, May 31. In the Palmerston North Police Court Victor Kirner and Andrew Colt, escapees from Weraroa Training Farm, pleaded guilty to two charges of breaking and entering local premises and stealing money and goods; also to breaking and entering premises at Levin and stealing articles of wear and food. They were committed to the Supreme Court, Wellington, for sentence. MARTON, June 2. John Robertson and George Curtis were arrested last night and charged with stealing from a private letter box at Halcombe a cheque for £195. They had secreted at tho junction a loaded repeater, and were in of ammunition, files, a torch, and pincers. * They were remanded. Both are young men. WELLINGTON, May 30. John Nolan pleaded guilty to breaking and entering Sir Francis Bell’s residence at Lowry Bay. He was committed for sentence. INVERCARGILL, June 2. Two youths, George M'Quarrie and Frank Jerome, were this morning sentenced to 12 months’ reformative detention on a charge of mischief by damaging a motor car, the property of Helen Dobbie, of Athol. Accused took the car from tho front of tho Municipal Theatre on May 23, and abandoned it in Dunedin. They also obtained petrol, oil, and a repair outfit by false representations. Probation was not recommended.
