THE WEATHER

HEAVY MONTHLY RAINFALL. Although rain fell on only nine days during May. the monthly fall totalled 3.C20 ihehes, which is considerable for a monthly period. This was due to the heavy rain which occurred on Sunday, May 13, the rain-gauge at the Pumping Station, Musselburgh, registering 1.320 in at 9 a.m. the following morning. A wet spell set in from the 4th to the 7th inclusive; tain fell on the 10th; and from the 13th to the 15th inclusive. A fine spell tvas experienced from the 15th till the 27th, light rain falling on the 28th. In May, 1922, rain fell on only eight days, a total fall of 1.560 in being recorded, and in the same month of the preceding year 11 wet days accounted for a total fall of .980 in. In May, 1920, there were 14 wet days, a fall of 2.360 in being recorded; and in May, 1919. 12 wet days caused a monthly fall, of I.Bloin. Up to the present month the total rainfall recorded is 23.925 in, which is more than the annual fall of 1920 and of 1921 respectively. The following were the points of rain recorded at 9 a.m. daily at the Pumping Station, Musselburgh, during the past month:—4, .340; 5, .280; 6, .160; 7. .020; 10. .020; 13, .700; 14, 1.320; 15, .160; 29, .020in;—a total of 3.020 in.
