WINTER SHOW.

LA KG K INCREASE OF ENTRIES. FKA'I URES FOR CARNIVAL WEEK. There is no question that Show Week is each year becoming more popular and is being recognised as an opportune time for holding meetings and conferences of the various representative bodies. The Winter Show, which is the chief source of attraction, promises this year to be an exceptionally good fine. 11l every section except farmers' butter and grain arid seeds, the entries are far in excess of any previous year, and in many (lasses the competition promises to be very keen. In the dairy produce section the entries are exceptionally large, and although the judges made a start on Friday morning, they do not expect to be able to make their final derisions before Tuesday morning, thus occupying three full clays in carrying through the judging of this section alone. In the tla-'s lor the factory whose output for the season gains the highest aggregate number of points, the results are exceptionally close between several factories, and it is one of the classes which the committee consider should receive every support. The Otago Harbour Board has offered a cup for competition in this section and in addition the society offers liberal prizes. The res'ldts of this competition are Hot made public until the ojlening of the show. For the V\ aII ak i Company's cup for the champion cheese iri the show there promises to Ire keen competition, and the same remarks apply to Messrs Wilkins, Ltd. s cup ior the best two cheese, while or coloured, in the show. It ,expected that moat of tne cheese factory managers will enter for the cheese grading competition which is a new' departure this year, and it will be neld on Thursday morning, the third day of the show, arid for which the Taieri and Peninsula Milk Supply Co. offer a challenge cup and the South Island Dairy Association donate a gold medal to the winner. . The apple section is Well represented and in most classes the entries are in excess of any previous year. The committee are somewhat disappointed that more interest is not taken in the class for apples for local market, as they believe that there is no beiter method of placing the fruit, industry before the public than bv exhibiting at the show. In bread and scones section there are again a large number of entries and to facilitate matters the committee have appointed four judges, thus dividing the labours which would lie impossible for only two judges to complete in time for the opening. The knitting section, which is a oreat feature iti some of the northern shows, could be extended in many directions, and it is just probable that the committee will add a number of additional classes next, year. In the root section 230 entries have been received and in one class, the swede turnips there are over 60 entries. and no’ doubt (he Kuifangata Coal Company’s prize of six tons of coal and Messrs Sutton and Sons challenge cup have encouraged our farmers to compete in this section As regards the fixtures for .he Show \\eek the show- will be officially opened by ~, V m '-. The question of accommodation has not been lost sight of by the committee, and it has the assurance of ilie Housing ’Committee that accommodation will be provided for everybody who has not already made previous arrangements. Whilst the work both in regard to staging of exhibits and the erection of stands is progressing favourably, the. holiday of Mon tiny will effect the completion of lhe work.
