OAMAR'J MARKETS. (From Oub Own O- respondent.) OAMARU, June 2. The stock market has not been characterised by activity. Ewes in lamb arc in request, young ewes being particularly well inquired for, but few sellers of sheep generally are to be met with, and the demand gees unsatisfied. The yarding at the weekly sale, though good, fell much below the offerings of previous weeks. SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. (From Our Own- Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, June 1. Stock. —During the past week the market for fe.t cattie and fat- sheep has improved considerably. At our last sales cx beef improved from 23 to 33 1001 b, also a decided advance in fat wethers, which improved from 23 to 3s per head. The store cattle market remains practically unchanged. There is a fairly keen demand for good lambs also forward wethers. The store cattle market is very lifeless, little change having taken place in this section. Jf anything, forward three and four-year-old bullocks are selling slightly better. Dairy cows and heifers are practically unsaleable, at anything like reasonable values. THE FRUIT AND PRODUCE WORLD. Reilly’s Central Produce Mart (Ltd.) reports:—Very heavy consignments of fruit and produce arriving daily. Apples and pears are selling at prices that must prove unpayable to growers. Present prices are in buyers’ favour, and unless better returns are secured for growers for choice cooking and dessert fruits the business generally will suffer. Growers and packers of inferior fruit should consume such fruit on the orchard, and thus give good growers and packers a chance to secure fair values. Large supplies of vegetables arriving daily. We placed heavy consignments of potatoes during the week. Turnips are in oyer-supply, prices are easier. There has been good inquiry for cattle and poultry foods of all descriptions—molasses, also spraying materials. A large quantity of poultry came forward for our bale on Wednesday, particularly turkeys. Pigs have been in excess of requirements, consequently prices are easier. At the moment there is a keen demand for good seed and table potatoes free from blight. Those requiring choice fruits should order immediately. E. OSWALD REILLY. Managing Director, Moray place, Dunedin. FOREIGN EGGS. The question of the marking of foreign eggs imported into Great Britain has been the subject of natch discussion in England for many months, and the matter has gone so far that it has led to the drafting ot the Merchandise Marks Bill to deal with the marking of foreign produce. The proposed legislation is the outcome of vigorous propaganda by producers in the United Kingdom, but it is meeting with strong opposition by the wholesale and distributing trades. The largest sources of supply of eggs for Great Britain used to be Russia and Denmark, and enormous quantities are still obtained from the latter country, the value of imports therefrom in 1920 being more than £7,090,009. Of late years it has been necessary to go farther afield, to Egypt and, more particularly, China, and large supplies are drawn from those places. The Chinese eggs are either frozen or chilled, and bacteriological examination has shown that the refrigerated eggs are much less infected than tho new-laid egg. The distributing trade states that there is good reason to believe that the imported frozen egg is often much fresher and more desirable than many of the eggs produced at home. In one case the eggs are frozen when fresh, while in the other there is no telling how old the egg might be, and through how many hands it ha 3 gone. The tatter phase of the question has been considered by merchants in Melbourne (says ?*ne Argus), ar.d the tendency during the last two or three years has been to put larger qualities of fresh eggs into cool store for autumn end winter use.
