May 25. —Cromwell continues to hold the premier position in Rugby football. An easy win against M anaka last Satuida)’ should go far to insure the play for Cromwell this year. The Wanaka team came to Cromwell with a determination to win. A large number of supporters accompanied the team. Cromwell right at the beginning established a lead, and won easily and comfortably by 32 points to nil. The curtainlaiser to the above match was a game between I.oxvburn and (Tornwell Schools. Lowbum boys proved superior on all points of the game, and won by 29 points to nine. Hockey.—The young ladies seem to lack combination in their play, as wa-s clearly proved at Clyde last Saturday, where they met defeat by 11 goals to 1. I County Elections. —On a recount of the votes in the Clutha Riding poll the’ inform al votes favoured Mr J. R. Webb. The official return new is—Mr J. R. Webb 53, Mr Geo. Moody 52. Mr Webb retaining the seat by one vote. Mr D. S. Middleton was re-elected chairman of the Vincent County. Building Trade—Mr D. C. Betts has in hand two' big contracts in the additions to the Athenamm Hall and the rebuilding of the Lowburn Hotel. Mr R. Thomas has started on the alterations and additions to the Golden Aeq Hotel. Mr Quartermain has begun work on a motor garage for the agents of the Ford car. Dredging.—Last week the last of the dredges on the Clutha, the Rise and Shine No. 11, closed down. A rumour, however, which we believe will be confirmed, is to the effect that the Rising Sun. dredge, closed down 12 months ago, has been purchased by a local gentleman, and will likely start work again. The privately-owned dredge on the Kawarau, the Electric, is undergoing repairs, and is likely to be commissioned. Accidents. —A young man named Ernest Campbell met with a serious accident at Morven Hills Station last week. While topping trees the butt of the tree that hs was working on sprang back, striking the unfortunate young man on the head and seriously fracturing his skull. Before assistance could be rendered to him he hod to lowered 49ft to the ground. He was brought to the Cromwell Hospital unconscious, and lay in that condition for three or four days, but is now making steady improvement from a very serious injury.—A well-known resident of Maungawera, Mr Jas. Haugh, sen., met with an accident through ins gig capsizing. Two of his ribs were broken. He is making good progress in the Cromwell Hospital. Co-operative Society.—An early start is expected. Tlie capital will be called up within a few days, and shareholders are requested to note this lact. Warden’s Gour‘.—Numerous applications for special dredging claims on tlie iMolyneux River, all depending on the Kawarau Syndicate’s dam at Lake Wakatipu being proceeded with, were adiourned to 13th June. Empire Day was fittingly celebrated at the Cromwell Public School by saluting the flag and the singing of the National and New Zealand Anthems, with a short address to the children by the Rev. W. P. Rankin. Weather —Heavy rain set in on Thursday evening, and continued all day Friday. The rivers show a slight rise.
