THE HOUSING QUESTION.
POSITION IN AUCKLAND. (From Our Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, May 20. The Major, replying to a deputation from the Council of Commerce regarding the housing question, said: “I am not attempting to excuse the lack of action in the past, nor am I casting any reflection whatever on the civic administration, but I do say frankly that the City Council realises today that this is a matter in yvhich it must take practical action in a manner commensurate with the great need. The only possible remedy is the building of mqre homes. There is a great tendency to-day to push everything off on to the Government, hut with regard to the housing question the council is now prepared to attack the problem and to do its utmost to find a solution. I have already mentioned the matter to Mr Massey, and he is prepared to cooperate with the City Council in this great work.”
