WEST TAIERI CHURCH
Notwithstanding the flooded state of the T’aieri Plain the little town of Outrani has been very busy for the past two days. The centre of attraction was the annual sale of work -of the West J aieri Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild. The sale was opened by ihe Rev. I>. Calder, of Alosgiel, who in a neat tittle speech apologised for the unavoidable absence of the minister, the Rev. J. Fordyce, but announced that he would be with them in an hour or so. He also expressed his pleasure at the sight of such well-filled stalls, such a willing band of workers, and the much larger band of keen buyers. He hoped the income would exceed their best expectations. The 2 ton. Jew t of fruit and produce sent as a free gift to the Presbyterian orphanages after the harvest thanksgiving services two or three weeks ago made no material difference to the generous members and adherents of the West Taiori Church. One room of the hall was well filled with sacks of wheat, oats, potatoes, turnips, etc., alt of which were sold before the doors closed the first afternoon. Alore produce came in later, and til's was also bought up quickly. A special feature of the sale this year was a cooked food stall. Fowls, geese, drakes, and legs of mutton, stuffed and cooked, boiled hams, meat paste, pickles, jam, cakes, etc., met with the same ready sale as the produce. The supply was unequal to the demand. An orchestra consisting of Air John Bathgate, the Bruce family from Momona, Miss Guest, and Air Watt added much to the joy of the evenings. The crowds who attended and bought so well spoke and showed in a most hearty and practical way their keen interest in the church, and their undoubted approval of the good work which the guild was doing. The takings at the sale amounted to £l2O. The stallholders were as follows: Fancy Work.—Airs Southgate and the Misses E. and J. Murray. plain Work. —Airs Fordyce and Airs Al ‘Donald. Produce —Mrs A. Walker, sen., and Mrs Ferguson. Sweets. —Alisses E. and Al. Dow. Cooked Food. —Airs Peter Bathgate and Airs J. Bathgate. Tea Rooms.—Airs Reid and Mrs Marshall and a number of willing girls. Competitions.—Mrs Brooks. Shooting.—Air P. Bathgate. Treasurer. —Airs F. Dow (Newton).
