NEWS IN BRIER

A daring attempt at burglary at the residence of Mr J. H. Bradney, Sherwood road, Mount Eden, at midnight was frustrated by Miss Bradney being awakened by a noise. Calling her father, a strange man was seen in her bedroom, but. he escaped. He had put over Miss Bradney’s face a piece of lint soaked with chemicals, which rendered her temporarily helpless. Dr Thacker told the Christchurch City Council that he would not stand for the Mayoralty at the April elections, but it was quite possible that he would come forward again at a later date. “As a matter of fact,” Dr Thacker said, “this city is too slow for me.” He intended to take a trip to the United States, where the cities were about 15 years ahead of Christchurch. He would keep his eyes open for suggestions to improve Christchurch, and would send them on for the benefit of Christchurch. The premises of Messrs Hugh Wright (Ltd.), outfitters, in Auckland, were entered and knitted silk and crepe de chine frocks, coat-frocks, and silk stockings to the value of over £IOO were stolen. The highest Customs returns for Auckland for the last 15 months were collected in January. The total war £187.956, .compared with £161,085 in December, and £109,060 in January, 1922. A fine of £25 was imposed on Ernest Walker Williams, manager for the Direct Supplies Company, who appeared at the Auckland Police Court on Friday on three charges of managing a lottery (says a Press Association message). It was stated that the system was founded upon a contract by which goods were sold on a time-payment basis, with an intimation that from among the customers one person each week would be selected to obtain £9O worth of goods free. The defence was that the selection was made by merit, not by chance, as the defendant chose the person he thought would be the best advertising medium. A conviction was recorded in one instance, and decision was reserved on the other two charges.
