Friday Evening. Messrs J. C. Williamson inaugurated their brief season at His Majesty’s. Theatre on Friday evening with the production o-f the American farce-drama "Johnny Get Your Gun.” Mr Louis Bennison, in the leading role, madf* his first appearance here, and was ably supported by a well-balanced caste. The play was repeated on Saturday before a large and appreciative audience, and on Monday and Tuesday ‘‘The Great Lover ’ was produced, and proved an even greater success than the former play, giving Mr Bennison more scope for his fine dramatic powers. Tea was handed around later, the arrangements being carried out by the House Committee with the assistance of several members. Altogether the occasion was a very pleasant one, and gave the visitors further opportunities for meeting Wellington residents. On all sides most appreciative opinions have been expressed of the citv, with which our neighbours from Australia appear to be delighted, although the weather has not been altogether on its best behaviour during the past day or two. The Dargaville Racing Club held its annual meeting for this year on the Ellerslie Racecourse last Saturday, when residents of Dargaville, as well as from the districts from Northern Wairoa and Auckland folk, were present in large numbers. His Excellency the Governor-General and Lady Jellicoe were present, as well as a large number of guests, who were invitefl to supper on _ board the Veronica 'after the performance. The large shed in which the performance took place was decorated with bunting, and two large Union Jacks formed the drop curtain on the stage. The first part of the programme comprised songs, dances, and musical items by the men of the ship; the second part was inken up in the staging of Gilbert and Sullivan's “Trial by Jury.” The annual tournament of the Dominion Bowling Association is attracting crowds of spectators to the Carlton Bowling Green. There are said to be some 500 bowlers from various parts of the Dominion participating in the tournament. Dr J. L. Greig and Mrs Greig (formerly of Greymouth) and tlicir two sons are visiting Auckland, and are staying at Mon Desir, Takapuna. Mr and Mrs John Salmon, cf Thames, have returned from their honeymoon, and are at present staying at Cargen. The marriage of Miss Agnes Fowlds, eldest daughter of the Hon. George Fowlds and Mrs Fowlds, Mount Albert, to Mr Colin M'Gregor Littlejohn, M.A., B.Sc., youngest son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Littlejohn, of Milton, Otago, took place on Thursday evening of last week at the Mount Albert Presbyterian Church. The bride’s, gown was of shell pink georgette with overdress of iridescent j silver crystal, the train of which was | finished with a large bow of silver tissue ribbon, and her tulle veil in a pale shade of pink was fastened to the hair with a silver coronet. After the ceremonv, a reception was held at Greystone Knowe, tire beautiful home of the bride's parents. Mrs J. A. Tole has left for Hawera where she will stay for some weeks with Mrs George Stubbs. „ Mr and Mrs P. S. M‘L-ean, who have been staying at Cargen, have returned to Napier. Miss Joyce Stevenson has left for Melbourne. where she- will he the guest of Dr and Sirs Paul Farmer, of Collins street, Melbourne. Miss May Ridings is visiting Dunedin, and is staying with her aunt, Miss Morris, at Littlebourne. The French battle cruiser Jules Michelet has arrived in cur harbour, and this week will be taken up in entertaining Rearadmiral Gilly and the members of the French Trade Mission. Already the invitations are out for a dinner party and dance at Government House.
