Chptain Joseph Maxwell, who is well known in Auckland shipping circles, died on the 14th. He had been ailing for some time, and his death was not unexpected •Captain Maxwell, who was 68 years of time, and his death was not unexpected. -Captain Maxwell, who was 68 years of age, was for 50 years in the service of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, for the. last 12 years as the company's marine superintendent at Auckland. He leaves a widow and one daughter. A London cable announces the death of Father Alan John Westby Perceval, a son of Sir Westby Perceval, former Agent General for New Zealand. Mr J. C. Watson, at one time Prime Minister of Australia, and for 20 years a member of the Commonwealth Parliament, is at present visiting his sister at Blenheim. Mr James Taylor, whose death occurred at his residence at Milburn on the 14th at tne age of 92 years, was at the time of his death (says the Clutha Leader) the oldest living member of the Loyal Dalton Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., having joined the lodge in 1873. A Sydney Press Association cable message states that Dr Herbert Robert Seddon, of Tauranga, New Zealand, has been appointed veterinary pathologist 'at Glenfield Veterinary Experiment Farm, under the Denartment of Agriculture. Air James Hislop, an old and respected resident of Greenfield, died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr James Allen. Riverside. on the 13th. The late Mr Ilislop was born in Kirk-Connell. Scotland, and cti"e to New Zealand about 28 years ago. He was twice married, his first wife being Aliss Janet. Robb, Kirk-Connell, and hv whom he had seven of a family. He married his second wife (Mies E len < Vttrel • . v >k>vale, and she survives him. There v ere two children of the second marriage. The deceased, who was a men of one • u i—■-ter. took a prominent part in affairs at Greenfield, and for a number of years was member for Balrporal No. 1 Riding on the Bruce County Council, of which he became chairman. He was also for a term a member of the Clutha River Board. His funeral, which took place to the Balelutha cemetery on the 15th, was largely attended. A pleasing ceremony took place at the Alosgiel Woollen Alills prior to the retirement of Mr James Smith after a period of service extending over 41 years. The staff of the weaving department presented Air Smith with a rug and a case of Loewe pipes as a mark of the esteem in which he is held. Mr Hiddlestone made the presentation, and wished the recipient every happiness in his retirement. Air Smith made suitable acknowledgment. Advice has been received at Gore that Mr J. Faulks, late of Argyle Station, has returned to Wellington. Mr Faulks has been on a tour of South Africa, hunting big game. Our Wellington correspondent telegraphs that Sir William Herries, who has not been in good health for some time, has accepted the advice of his doctor that he should become a patient of the Bowen Street Hospital. He is in need of a complete rest for several weeks. The death took place at his home in Filleul street on Wednesday of Air James Gilmour Yates, the well-known musician. Mr Yates has played for dances for over 30 years, and until recently he was associated with Mr George Beath in supplying dance music. His last engagement was m September, 1921. At the Victoria College Council meeting on Wednesday night (says a Wellington Press Association message). Professor D. C. H. Fiorance (Hongkong University) was appointed to tlie chair of physics, in place of Professor Alarsden, who has resigned. Professor Fiorance is a New Zealander, who has hal a brilliant career in research work Under Sir Ernest Rutherford lie has been lecturer and demonstrator at Alanchester University. He graduated in New Zealand as AI.A. with first-class honours in ISOS, and Al. Se. in 1309. The appointment was made on Sir Ernest Rutherford’s locommendation out of 13 applications from various parts of the Empire. Air‘Walter Blaekie, of Alosgiel, is at present on a visit to Eltham. He is accompanied by his son, Air Thomas Blaekie. who is a resident of Siam, and is spending a holiday In the dominion. Mr E. A. Atkinson, of Oamaru, has decided to become a candidate for a seat on the Otago Land Board representing the Crown tenants. The election will take place in April. A Christchurch Press Association message announces that the Governor-General has accepted the position of patron of the United Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association of New Zealand. Ambassador Herbert Booth, a brother of General Bramwell Booth and son of the founder of the Salvation Army, arrived at Wellington by the Alaunganui on Alonday last. This is his ninth visit to New Zealand. The Registrar, Otago University, has advised the Otago Hospital Board that the position of dietitian has been offered to Miss Helen Clarke, at a salary of £603 per annum and passage money not exceeding £io, and, further, that Aliss Clarke has been offered a three years’ engagement

Tire death occurred at Tokoiti on Tuesday last of Mrs Oarrulhers, one of the earliest residents of the Tokomairiro district. The deceased, whose maiden name was Janet C’clquhoun, was horn in Glasgow nearly 86 years ago, and as a young woman came ta New Zealand by the ship Bruce at the latter end of 1863. Shortly after landing she entered the service of the late Captain Cargill, and some time later married Air Richard t’arruthers (a shipmate), and settled for a while at Richmond Hill, Dunedin, her hushand, who was a carpenter, building the first house ill that locality. Over 50 years ago they removed to the Tokomairiro district, making their home in Fairfax (now Tokoiti), whore the family has continued to reside till the present time. She is survived by a family of three sons and two daughters and a large number of grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her some 16 years ago. 'Hie reappointment is announced of the members of the Prison* Board, namely, the Chief Justice (Fir Robert Float), the Undersecretary of Justice and Controller-General of Prisons (Mr C. E. Alatthews), the In-soector-Gcr.eral of Alentil Hospitals (Mr J. F. S. Hay), Sir George Fenwick (Dunedin), Alessrs G. C. B. Jordan (Tauranga), E. Hall (Onehunga), and W. Reece (Christchurch). A London cable announces the death of Kate Santley, actress. She was born in America. In youth she appeared at Edinburgh as Jessica in “The Merchant of Venice” with Charles Kean. She achieved many successes in drama and in musical pieces on the London stage, and tracii recently (though never appearing professionally since 1894) was lessee of the Royalty Theatre.
