COMPETITIONS. Following are the competitions fixed upon for this season by the Otago Anglers’ Association :—- Waikouaiti River, February 10. The seventh competition on the programme of the local Anglers’ Association was held on the Contour Channel on Saturday last. Up to time of going to press no results had come to hand. The last competition of the series takes place on the Waikouaiti on February 10. Amongst expected anglers from the north is Colonel C. A. Whitney, of Auckland, who, it is understood, will be accompanied by other -northerners. The Shag is reported to have had a good scour out, and is now providing good sport. The Leith has produced one or two nice fish during the last few days, a 6ilb and one b being taken. A party of anglers who were lately at the Oreti met with fair success. The fish were feeding on the Slone fly, and were hard to induce to rise to the *wct fly. The party, however, caught a number of fish running up to The fishing was not quite as good as it had been in previous years owing to the electrical disturbances that had passed over the district. One of the anglers says he has never seen the river better stocked with large fish, which, perhaps, a more experienced angler would have landed. I am told that some heavy fish have been taken out of the Mataura between Garston, Athol, and Pawero. A party of Dunedin anglers, although not far away from the upper waters of the Mataura, did not visit the river, but were told by anglers that they had been getting some very good bags there. Scene —Sydney fish shop. Ladv : “Give me some New Zealand blue cod.” Shopman : “Sorry, madam, but we are sold out. We expect a supply any time —in fact, they are in the harbour now.” Some nice fish in fine condition was recently taken by Messrs E. Orofts and J. M. Watson irom Lake Waituna. The fish scaled 21,1 b, 51b, 6|lb, 101 b, and 12Jib. ‘Creel,” writing in the Southland Times on January 6, says : —Climatic conditions were not good for the holidays, easterly winds prevailing on most days. Some of the rivers, too, were not in good order, the smaller streams being fairly low and the larger ones being slightly discoloured. I noticed a vigorous growth of American duckweed in the Oreti below the Iron Bridge. It has shown considerable expansion since last, year, and if it be beneficial for preserving the natural feed for trout, then the Oreti should improve with results. I do not expect to see this river get unfishable through the weed, as the shingly bottom should prevent it from getting a hold like it has on the Makarewa River. The Waiau was poor for results, the only decent capture I heard of being a 61b Atlantic salmon caught by Mr Art bus Hamilton on the cocoon minnow in the Waiau at the mouth of the Wairaki. A larger specimen was hooked, but, unfortunately lost. A party of looal .anglers visited the Mararoa at Mount York and landed some good fish on the minnow. They averaged about 61b. Messrs D. Cameron, V. Allison, and O. Tobey (Mataura) had a successful day on Wvndham. They report the “Temuka” as the killing fly. Mr A. Ross (Wyndham) caught some nice fish from the Mataura River with the fly, the heaviest weighing 51b. Mr R. Kidd filled a fine fish 4£ib weight on the Oreti below the Iron Bridge. He was lured by a female AI a roll Brown fly At the time of writing the prospects are that the Oreti River will be discoloured for the week-end. The other rivers should be in good order. , . . A 121 b trout was recently caught in the breakers at the mouth of the Ashburton River by Mr T. Corbett. The trout was “landed” with a throw-line and bob._
