THE RAND REVOLT

ACCUSED PLEAD GUILTY. JOHANNESBURG, December 20. In 35 sedition cases all the accused pleaded guilty, and were fined £lO each, or one month’s hard lapour. CONDEMNED MEN REPRIEVED. CAPETOWN, December 22. Eleven men who were condemned to death in connection with the murders at Brakpan of mine officials during the March revolt, have been reprieved. This decision is generally applauded. In a petition to the Governor-General the condemned men said: “We are not murderers, as we understand the word. We did want to keep as much as possible the good things of life for our families, but as hunger pressed we fell readily into the organisation of others, who left us to take the risk and bear the blame. The men who incited us by speech did so with impunity.”
