It is stated'that out of some thousands of young plants laid out near Hokitika for afforestation purposes, only one has died in a couple of years. It is also stated that rimu and kahikatea plant-s (red and white pine) have been noted to grow a couple of inches in a few months. The “silent” policeman, which the Palmerston North Borough Council recently decided to place at the intersection of Rangitikei and Cuba streets, has now been erected. The structure, which consists of a heavymetal base with an upright rod on which are metal plates bearing thereon instructions to drivers of vehicular traffic, etc., stands about four feet high and is painted red.
