Wednesday evening. Christmas Eve was observed on Friday evening, the late night—for shopping, and the streets presented a gay and festive appearance, thronged with people until a late hour. Beautiful weather prevailed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and all the resorts in the vicinity of Dunedin were w T ell patronised by picnic parties. A very large number of race-goers attended the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Summer meeting at Wingatui on Boxing Day, and thoroughly enjoyed the outing in the beautiful weather, the interesting events provided by the race card, and the enlivening strains of the band. Among those present were Mr and Mrs Acton Adams, Dr and Mrs O’Neill, Dr and Mrs K. Itoss, Mr J. Mill, Miss A. Mill, Dr and Mrs Mill (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs Theomin, Mr and Mrs J. A. Cook, Mr and Mrs F. Parker, Mr and Mrs Cotterill, Mr and Mrs C. G. Dalgety (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs H. Holderness, Mr and Mrs Clieeseman, the Misses Gallaway, Nott, Haggitt, Macandiew, Bridgeman, J. Haggitt (Invercargill), Graham, Burnett, and Messrs Cowper, Edmond, Sinclair (2), Haggitt, Shannon, Bridgeman (Wanganui), Gould (Christchurch). The . management of the Savoy Lounge inaugurated the opening of their new Tudor dining hall with a public dinner and dance on Boxing Night, the first of a series. The charming Tudor hall and. Clarence lounge, furnished in period style, with the dimmed electric lights, made a beautiful setting for the dancers in their varied-coloured frocks. A cordial welcome was extended to the Allan Wilkie Shakespearean Company, who opened their season at His Majesty's Theatre on Boxing Night with an excellent representation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” appropriately chosen for its brightness and humour. During the interval prolonged applause was awarded to the various groups of actors, also at the fall of the curtain. Sir John and Lady Ross and the Misses Ross are visiting their farm, near Balclutha.. Mr and Mrs Max Scherek left on Tuesday for Auckland, to be present at the wedding of Mr J. Salmon, S.M., to Miss Betty Macmillan. Mr and Mrs A. A. Finch are at Moeraki for the holidays. Mr and Mrs Douglas Ramsay are Spending. a few weeks at Waihola. Dr and Mrs M'Kibbin are the guests of Mrs . Fairclough (Christchurch). Mr and Mrs J. Sim are the guests of Mrs E. LeCren, Timaru. Mr and Mrs Howard Dodgshun and Mrs Fotheiinghami have gone to spend a few weeks in Central Otago. Mr and -Mrs Brian Haggitt (Invercargill) and Miss Joyce Haggitt are at Macandrew’s Bay, where they have taken a cottage. Mr and Mrs F. Oldham left on Thursday for Hanmer. Mr and Mrs H. S. Fenwick are staving at Waikouaiti. Mr and Mrs Leslie Mills left on Saturday to motor to Wanaka. Mr and Mrs R. Gilkison are spending the holidays at Queenstown with their son. Mr Robin Gilkison, who is practising- as a lawyer there. Mr and Mrs C. White are at Waikouaiti for the holidays. Miss Leslie Laidlaw is the guest of Mrs Barnett at Hampden. Mr and Mrs G. M'Lean and family are staying at Hampden at present. Mrs Leslie Wilson has returned from- her visit to the North Island, and is staying at Mrs Eager’s in Cargill street. Mr and Mrs E. Helmore, Fendalton, for the Christmas bo.ijavs. St. Mary's Church, Merivale, effective'/ decorated with masses of delphiniums, was crowded with friends an .i w.il-wishers on Tuesday afternoon, when the wedding was celebrated of Mis 3 Frances Ella (Fanny), only daughter of Mr arid Mrs W. ■ B Fox. of ‘Holton,’ Papanni, and Mt William Gerald Gerard, second son of Mr and Mi* George Gerard, of Snowdon, North Canterbury. Archdeacon P. B. Hargitt conducted the ceremony, and Mr Davis Hunt was organist. The' bride, who was given away by her father, wore a charmihg frock of ivory brocaded satin, with seeves and side drapery of ivory georgette. The long georgette court train, niched at intervals; gave a pleasing filmy effect, and threw into strong relief the beautiful bridal v.il of exquisite Limerick lace, which had been worft by the bride’s mother at her wedding. A Rns an coronet with sprays of orange blossom held the veil in position, and a sheaf of large cream irises was carried instead of a bouquet. Miss Peggy Palmer and Miss Betsy Reeves were bridesmaids. Both woie dai lty frocks of delphinium blu * georgette, mounted on mauve satin, and blue veils arranged over Russian coronets, while their bouquet* were of delphiniums of the same shade a* their frocks. Two smaller girls. Deniao Gerard (the bridegroom's sister) and Elizabeth Murray-Aynsley, in pretty little delphinium blue georgette fiock3 and silver lace caps completed a picturesque bridal group. Mr Derek Gou’d was best man, and Mr John Moore was groomsman. The reception was held at “Halton” in a spacious marquee, with blue floral decorations. Mi* Fox wore a handsome gown of gieen marocain, with corsage and panels of cire lace, and a black hat with transparent brim and heron feather mount; her bouquet was of shaded pink ro3es. Owing to illness the bridegroom's mother was unable to be present. When Mr and Mis Gerald Gerard left for their wedding tour the bride wore a becoming frock of amber taffetas and lace, with wide sash of Liberty velvet, and a wide-brimmed hat of amber lace, crinoline straw, with large red rose at one side. Amongst the guests were Mr Geo ge Gerard, Mrs Cracroft Wilson and Mrs Hcatlicote Gray (aunts of the bride), Mi* George Murray-Aynsley (aunt of the bridegroom), the Misses Gerard, Mr and Mrs V.

Large attendances of parents and visitors have been present in each instance. Dr and Mrs Fitchett have left for Taupo, where they will spend the Christmas holidays. The Misses Molly and Joyce Nathan returned by the last trip of the Niagara from an enjoyable visit to Vanocuver. Among those at present staying at Cargen are Mr Justioe and Mts Stringer, Mr and Mrs D. S-. M‘Lean (Napier), Mr and Mrs H. D. Bates, and Miss Bates (Wanganui), Major and Mrs Dean Pitt (Napier), Mrs R. J. Couper (Hawke's Bay), Mis Orton (Wanganui), and Mr J. 11 - Salmon and Miss Salmon (Thames). An interesting visitor to Auckland at the present time is Miss Beatrice Osmond, who is a membor of the Joint Parliamentary Ai.vsory Council, London, to which women’s societies and organisations report when Bills dealing with, the welfare of women and children come before the House of Commons. Miss Osmond is staying at Cargen, and has already made many friends in Auckland. Mrs J. C. Wilkin, who has been making a short stay in Christchurch, returned north last week.
