ANNUAL TOURNAMENT OPENED. CHRISTCHURCH, December 26. The Chess Congress opened at Christchurch to-day with 14 entrants for the championship, including Dunlop, the holder. The principal absentees were Barnes and Davis. Tile delegates were welcomed by Mr Wigram, president of the association, and a preliminary meeting was held to settle the. details of play. The first round of the dominion tournament resulted as follows: Pihl beat Friberg, Dunlop beat Buchan. Coombs beat M’Crea. Severne beat Roberts. Stevens beat Anderson. Kelling drew with Hicks. December 27. At the cliess championship congress play in the second round resulted: Anderson v. Pihl.—Anderson played soundly, and worked up a mating position on move 40, and Pihl resigned. Coombs v. Dunlop.—This was an irregular Queen’s Pawn opening, Dunlop securing a win. M‘Crea v. Buchan. —The Queen Bishop's Gambit offered by M'Crea was declined. M'Crea being pressed for time later on, offered a draw, which was accepted by Buclfan, who had rather a cramped position. Severn v. Miller. —Miller eventually re signed.
