SCHOOL BREAK-UPS

TOKOMAIRIRO DISTRICT HIGH. SCHOOL. The “break-up” of the Tokomairiro District High School was held on the 21st, the ? rises to the infants and to Standards I, I, 111, and IV beinjj presented at the school by the Revs. Clark and Canon Small (members of school committee) at 11 a.m. In the evening the prizes to Standards V and VI and to the secondary classes were distributed in the Coronation Hall, among those taking part being the Mayor (Mr A. Rennie) and Mr Dickson for Chalmers). An apology for absence was to hand from Mr Edie, M.P. for Clutha. In addition to the school prizes and medals there were also distributed the medals won by the primary football team (South Otago seven-a-side tournament) and by the Otago Public Schools’ Junior Relay Championship Team, and the South buigo Primary Schools’ Football Shield, won for the second year by the Tokomairiro District High School boys. The annual break-up ceremony took place on the 20th, the infant department and Standards L and 11. in the school in the morning, and the upper classes in the Presbyterian Sunday School Hall in the evening. In the absence of the chairman, Mr D. Marshall, Mr H. C. Seaman presided. In the morning Hon. D. T. Fleming, Rev. J. C. M'Dowell, and Mr J. Shaw (ex-chair-man) addressed the large number assembled, and assisted in the distribution of prizes. At the evening ceremony the pupils from the various classes provided a splendid programme of musical and elocutionary items, which were highly appreciated by the crowded audience. Mr J. Edie, M.P., congratulated the school on the fine programme provided, and gave some sound advice to the pupils who were about to leave the school. Mr Edie thanked the electors of Kaitangata for supporting him so well at the recent election, and during the evening Mrs Edie was presented with a bouquet of lovely roses, presented with a boqaet of lovely roses. Mr T. Begg, head master, read Christmas greetings from the former head master, Mr A. Mathews, and thanked the committee and the parents for the hearty support given to the members of the staff throughout the year and in making the concert such a success. He concluded by making an appeal to the residents to stir up the Borough Council to take steps to provide a hall in keeping with the size and importance of the town, and the hearty manner in which Mr Begg’s remarks were received showed clearly that the residents realise the need, and are prepared to support any movement in that direction.

MIDDLEMARCH. The “break-up” function of the Middlemarch School was held in the A. and P. Hall on the evening of the 20th, when the building was filled with parents and friends of the children. The proceedings opened with the singing of the National Anthem. Mr itobert Robertson (chairman of school committee) presided, and expressed the pleasure ,of the committee at the large number of people who took an interest in the educational advancement of the young people, and thanked the teachers for the work of the year and for the large measure of success that had attended their instruction. The songs, “Whispering Hope,” “Looh Lomond,” “Chiming Bells,” and “Hush Thee, my Babie” were particularly well interpreted, and the action song “Village Maidens” beautifully sung by the junior pupils. The outstanding features of the programme, however, were the Japanese Fan song, “The Combat,” between FitzJames and Roderick Dhu, from Scott’s “Lady of the Lake,” powerfully portrayed by two Scotch boys who have been on the very scene of the duel. The “Farmyard Chorus,” and a most amusina sketch entitled “The Parade of the Highcliff Submarine Kilties” (in which the headmaster took part). Mrs T. Smith supplied accompaniments. The gnnual break-up and presentation of prizes of the above school was held in the School Hall on the evening of Thursday, the 14th inst The attendance was very large, the hall being crowded, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The scholars gave a very interesting programme of songs, recitations, dialogues, etc., which were very efficiently rendered and much appreciated Ivy those present. During the evening tihe prizes were pemented by Mr J. J. Walker, the chairman of itiA School Committee, who •Iso 'gave an address dealing with many phases of school life and the future of the child. One of the pupils, Charles Bryant, who won the prepared speech competition, •Iso gave a speech on New Zealand, anil

The annual ceremony of the break-up of the Coal Creek School took place on Thursday last, when a goodly number of parents and friends assembled to celebrate the occasion. Mr G. Vtrnor, chairman of the School Committee, occupied the chair. The sdhool was artistically decorated with flowers, and a display of the pupils’ handwork m cardboard and plasticine lent a pleasing effect to the scene. The children creditably rendered a programme of songs, solos, duets, and recitations, all of which were greatly appreciated by those present. A special feature of the entertainment was a little play from Dickens’s “ David Copperfield,” in which six pupils took part. They acquitted themselves in a manner that brought down the plaudits of the audience. The following is a list of the prize winners :

The . annual break-up ceremony in connection with Tapanui District High School took place on Ihursday, 21st., and was a very successful function. The work during the year had gone on smoothly, and the school generally is in a very satisfactory state. An excellent musical programme was supplied by the pupils, and the Mayoress (Mrs W. R.
