Twenty-eight residents of Shannon appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North on charges of playing “two-up.” Constable M'Gregor, of Shannon, stated that from a distance of 75 yards ho watched 70 men playing “two-up.” Some of the players were fairly young. The magistrate fined each of the accused £5 and costs, remarking that if a man went to a “two-up” school, even to watch the game, he had only himself to blame for being identified as one of the participants.
