INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION

OPENED IN CHRISTCHURCH. BEWILDERING DISPLAY OF EXHIBITS. CHRISTCHURCH, November 18. To secure the support of the general public for goods produced in their own country is the main object of the promotors of the 1922 Industrial Exhibition, which was officially opened at the King Edward Barracks to-day. The exhibition itself is an unprecedented event in the history of New Zealand industry. It is by far the largest exhibition of ils lend ever held in the dominion, and its success is assured not only by the great number of exhibits which have been sent in, but also hv the great interest which has been created in other centres. Cities and towns, from Auckland to the Bluff, have their own particular exhibits, and besides these the various industries of all sorts and classes are exceptionally well represented. Manufactories, producers of raw materials, and the hundred and one industrial concerns throughout the land have contributed to the general quota, which covers a truly bewildering range. There are approximately from 250 to 300 exhibitors, and all have gone to much trouble in t.he arrangement of their particular stands. Hundreds of stalls lino the avenues, and on each of these, tastefully arranged, arc samples of the result of dominion progressiveness. As King Edward Barracks are not large enough, an annexe has been built in Cashel street, one-tenth of a mile long and of sufficient breadth to meet the heavy demand upon space. The iivo buildings have a total floor space of 70,000 smiare feet. The exhibition was opened by Ladv ellicoe, who read a telegram from the Governor-general conveying his warmest good wishes for the success of the exhibition. Mr Massey also telegraphed expressing the hone that the object ihe industrialists of New Zealand had in view would be successful from educative and financial standpoints. The TTon. E. P. Lee. speaking on behalf of the Government. said that the progress of industries in N-'w Zealand had been great.. Tie had visited the industries i.o iho main centres, and bad been astonished at what was being produced there now. There was concentrated organisation on behalf of the industries as a whole. Hir R. Heaton Rhodes also spoke. The exhibition will remain open till tho end of the year.
