Invercargill is to have a band co:itost early in November. A strong committee is working with ci view to making the contest a big success, and so far the promises from the various bands are very encouraging. It is the intention to have file contest in two sections one section for Pipe Bands, and the other for country Brass Bands. There will he a quickstep and •election in each section, and in addition there will be quartettes and cornet tolos. Up to the present 11 hands have signified their intention of competing, and it: is anticipated that the venture will he a very successful one. That New Zealanders are true sports and lovers of the chase was illustrated at the Htiia down near Manakau Heads, rocputlv (says the Auckland Herald). A young man, son of one of the old pioneers, had met with an accident, and was hobbling e.l>out on crutches when the dogs got on the trail of a wild pig. Down Vent the crutches and off went the young man in hot chase. The dogs bailed up the pig, the hunter tided it. and then hopped hack and resume.l Ins erntehes, a sorer but a happier man.
