The nominations received for the minor events at the Avondale Spring meeting are very satisfactory, the visiting division being much stronger than usual. Evidently Waimai’s racing career is not over, as the old fellow is engaged at Avondale. The Auckland Cup winner, Starland, is engaged in the steeplechase events at Avondale. He has been following the hounds during the present season. Trainers have been given an opportunity lately of educating their two-year-olds at, the barrier. Libertas (Quinn Abbey— Freedom mare) shows the most promise so far. The relative to Queen Abbey is very smart in getting into her stride. Mr Paterson’s two-year-old Uralla has nearly recovered from the mishap she met with a. short time back, and is doing light work on the track. Mr Friedlander’s two-year-old filly Charlady (Absurd- —Lady D.) is shaping well in her work. Royal Present is galloping well on the track' He has no difficulty in accounting for his stable companion Glen Canny. Khublai Khan was given a gallop over a mile and a half on Saturday morning, finishing up his task well in fair time. She Bang is sprinting well in her work. With 6.9 in the saddle the Nassau filly is nicely placed in the Flying Handicap at Avondale. Air Nieol’s pair. Spirit Level and Rosavella. have improved considerably since going inio Air A. Rue’s charge. The former lias shown fair form on the track, but so far has failed to pick up a stake. Raceful is being sent along in his work, and will he ready for early racing. The imported filly Dancing Doll is shaping well on the track. I he Maiden at. Avondale will probably be her first start in this country. Petite is carrying a much brighter appearance and may do better this season. Nocturne is hitiing our well in her work. She is engaged in the Avondale Guineas. Epitaph has been allowed to drop out of the Avondale Guineas. Ranine being Air A. B. William’s representative. I.ast year he captured the event with Grotesque. RAGINC IN NEW ZEALAND MARTON RACES. SYDNEY, September 10. The following are the results of three of the races run at Randwick this afternoon: THE CHELMSFORD STAKES, Of lOOOsovs. Weight for age. Nine furlongs. Mr W. M. Maekay’s br e Beauford (Beau Soult- Blueford), 6yrs (A. Wood) .. .. 1 Mr O. D. Greenwood’s b g Gloaming (The Welkin —Light), aged (G. Young) .. ‘2 Mr R. Bailie’s blk or br li David (Baverstock —Linotype), syrs (AA - . Duncan) 3 Beauford won by three-quarters of a length, with a quarter of a length between second and third. Time, lmin 53sc . The Australasian record is lmin Sljsec, held by Chrysoleus. There were 3 4 starters. Steady rain during the forenoon failed to diminish the enthusiasm in the Beauford-Gloaming contest, though a plethora of macintoshes and wet weather attire- robbed Randwick of , the bright, gay setting worthy of the occasion. After lunch the weather cleared beautifully, but the track was heavy. A feature of the match was the remarkably even division of opinion of the public and' turf tipsters in their fancies, with Beauford slightly' in

favour. Much depended on the post positions, Gloaming drawing seven and Beauford fourteen. Gloaming jumped to the front immediately, Beauford being slightly left. Passing the mile post Gloaming led Tressayr, with Beauford moving into third place. Gloaming, T r essay r, and Soorak led the field round the bend. Beauford was seemingly unable to overtake the trio. Furious challenged the leaders entering the straight, but Beauford came fast and overtook Gloeimr ing at the half-distance. The New Zealander responded gamely to his rider's prompting, but, though sticking it- out gamely, lie failed to head the Newcastle galloper. Mr Mason said that Gloaming was beaten on his merits. Beau ford’s stock has appreciably increased as a. result of the conquest, but the admirers of Gloaming are satisfied with the New Zealander’s performance in the heavy going. Mr Ala-son added that Gloaming was as fit as he could l>e, and w«s fairly and squarely beaten. Two years ago it might have been different. He is not bo young as he used to be. Beauford was undoubtedly a great- galloper TRAMWAY HANDICAP. Rostrum 1, Fleurite 2, Loyal Irish 3. Won by half m length. Time, lmin 26Asec. SPRING HANDlCAP.—Wirriway 1, Molynuex 2, LLanthony 3.
