THE STATISTICIAN’S FIGURES. The Abstract of Monthly Statistics reports that the index number for the three tood groups as at July 15 was 1537. ■■ n increase of nine points as compared with the preceding month’s figure, and an increase of 43.64 per cent, as compared with that , for July, , 1914. I In the groceries group piites remained j almost stationary for the month in most ! towns, a fall of three points being due ; to slight falls in a few minor items. A rise of 59 points in the daily products group was caused by a rise in 'he price of butter in all towns. This commodity showed a rise of from 3d to 4d per lb over the previous month. A fall in the price of eggs partially counteracted the effect of the rise in butter. > The index number for the meat group fell nine points. Most items remained stationary; a fall in the prices of beef i joints in some towns being responsible for the fall in the index number.
