On the Sunday School roll of the churches within the bounds of the Presbytery of Dunedin there are 5699 pupils, with 166 male teachers. There was a decrease of 15 in the number of woman Sunday School teachers. For various thefts of gold watches, trinkets, etc., at Naseby and Oturehua, Cyril Victor Barker, alias Blake, was charged and pleaded guilty, that hoinpr out of work he was “up against it,” and had succumbed to temptation. Subsequently it was ascertained that the prisoner held an unenviable record, and was known in \\ cllington. He was sentenced on each charge to three months’ imprisonment. A poll taken by the Dannevirke Kleetrie Power Board on the proposal to borrow £175.000 for the reticulation of the district for a supply of hydro-electric power and other purposes in connection therewith was carried by 651 votes to 93. Five votes were informal. The poll was very small, only a three-fifths majority being required. ’Hie 10 a.m. mixed train from Stratford southward was derailed 500 yards north of Ngaere station. Nine trucks left the line, six being badly smashed in a cutting. Several passengers were on the train, but none was injured. The Soldiers’ Club at Ashburton was burglariously entered late on the 7th, and r,.. taken from the billiard room till, and a quantity of cigarettes and tobacco. Entrance was made by a fanlight at the rear of the premises, for there were fingerprints on tho fanlight and boot-prints <n the window sill. 'lnis is the second occasion on which the club has been illegally entered.
