PROPOSED WOOLLEN MILL. A largely-attended meeting of those interested in the proposed woollen mill for Winton district was held at Winton recently. The Mayor (Mr T. Walker) presided. He moved that Mr W. Hamilton, who had taken an active interest in the project, be elected chairman. Mr Hamilton was then appointed, and Mr W. D. Cowre secretary. Mr W. Hagerty produced a large amount of correspondence ho had received from abroad legarding woollen mills, the cost of machinery and construction. He said a two-course mill complete would cost approximately £30,000. it only meant 300 subscribers of £IOO each, and surely this was a small amount for Southland to raise. No mill in Now Zealand had called up more than 4s 6d in the £ In capital. He might also say that, the Winton Borough Council had generously arranged to provide the land for the mill site, which was in every wav ideal for the purpose. Messrs j. Welsh, H. Liddell, and R. Wilson addressed the meeting, the general trend of their remarks being that a woollen mill in the district, with the magnificent back country behind, would be a very profitable concern, besides providing labour for numbers of the young folk. It was decided that Messrs W. Hamilton. If. Liddell, J. Butler, A. Robertson. R. Raich, and Dr Gow be appointed provisional directors for the purpose of getting esti mates and drawing up a prospectus.
