TAPANUI POULTRY AND PRODUCE SHOW

The Ta-pamu Poultry end Produce Club held their thirty-fourth annual show oil Saturday Bth, under very favourable weather conditions, a clear, cold clay following sharp frost The exhibition was again very successful, with good entries in all sections. Poultiy exhibits were about the same as last veer, and the judge (Mr Charles T. Grant’, Winton) was well satisfied with the display generally. In game there was nothing that called for special mention, and entries were meagre. The winners ir. the Plymouth Rock classes were fit for any of the larger shows. The winning hen was a good size and t: pe. weil laced. A fault in some of the classes in this section was that, the markings vvei'e too broad. Jn_ \\ fn.e Rocks the winning cockerel was a mrd of good type and size, but could have been a little lighter in feather. Minoixas m the open section had rather much of a leaning to the utility side, end were lacking in length of leg and size. The White Leghorns were a disappointing lot, too coarse in headgear and not enough size. Many of them were -also badly shown, and in _ tins respect the judge suggested more attention generally to show condition. The winning Brown Leghorn hen pleased the judge, being of the right shade’ of colour end quality of pencilling the others being too dark In White Leghorns the first priz- birds were all good. Black Orpingtons were not up to true type and size, and White Leghorns vvei'e not so good as those shown last year. The winning cock was the pick, white of iace, but otherwise of good type of carriage, with plenty of life The winning pullet was also a nice little bird, with the best comb in the class, evenly serrated, and of the right- size. Ducks, geese, etc., brought out poor competition, in most eases there, being only a single specimen The winter produce section was again well supported. Grain rn-ade a very fail' display, and turnips brought out splendid entries. The honours were well divided, and keen interest was displayed by the growers of roots. Mr A. J. Stiven had somewhat of a monopoly of grade produce, and the quality was again good all through. Mr D. Martin (Btaumcr.l) h‘.id on exhibition a very fine collection of RQ.rdon and field carrots, and also sent- a splendid show of apples, which were nuieli admired. Mr C. T. Grant (Winton) judged the poultry ; Messrs John Black and M. Ferguson, the’turnips; Mr AVins-los .(Invercargill), the grain; and Mr Newman (Gore), the vegetables and got through their work in good time. The Committee of Management (with Mr M. M'Auley as president and Mr A. Mini yard as secretary) carried out the arrangements in a complete manner. A great improvement at night was the lighting of the hall bv electricity. Tea, rooms were conducted by the ladies in aid cf the hos-ixital funds, and a stall was also run for tho R.US si an "Save the Children” Fund. Music was supplied by the brass and string bands, and the show was well patronised by the public. A good supply of hares (the result of a shoot held at Moa Flat a few days previously) was disposed of at auction, as well as other produce. The following is the detailed prizelist:—
