ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. CHRISTCHURCH, July 5. At the Magistrate’s Court, Charles Francis Riley was committed for trial on a charge of attempted fraud. The accused, it was alleged, attempted to obtain £SO from Mr Don Harvey by falsely stating that he had sold the rights of a patent receptacle to Mennies (Ltd.), Auckland, for £BOOO, and that the receptacle was patented in the countries where it was intended Harvey should travel in the interests of the patent. He was further charged with having made a false document —a cheque on the National Bank of New Zealand, Wellington (purporting to be signed by Alfred Take.-, managw * director of the Windsor Manufacturing Company (Ltd.), with the intention that it should be acted upon as if it were genuine. Evidence was given that accused rented an office in the city and had set up as a mechanical draughtsman. He advertised for a partner and invited correspondence from inventors. Several people replied who were shown the cheque, accused staling that it had been received for the patent. Negotiations were entered into by applicants to travel the world in the interests of the patent, but nothing came of them, and subsequently accused was arrested.
