SENTENCE OF DEATH
MOREE MURDER TRIAL. SYDNEY, April 27. John Curran was found guilty of murdering Thomas Hogan, Mayor of Moree, and was sentenced to death. The defence entered a plea of insanity. The accused, in giving evidence, blamed Mr Hogan for the loss of a stadium which accused had built at Moree, but for which he failed to obtain a license to hold boxing contests. He went shearing, and while he wa*» away Mr Hogan, as Mayor, obtained the permission of the Chief Secretary, broke the locks of the stadium, and held a boxing contest for patriotic purpose's. Accused demanded to see Mr Hogan’s authority for entering the stadium and during the altercation the tragedy occurred. [On December 12 the Mayor of Moree (Mr T. R. Hogan) was shot dead while walking home from church. A man named Curran was arrested. He said to the police: “I am satisfied that I shot him.” An eye-witness said that the assailant fired three shots at Air Hogan’s head and body, followed by two more at the prostrate body. Curran possessed a rifle, also a belt with an automatic revolver and 300 rounds of ammunition Curran served a sentence *omo years ago for attempting to shoot a solicitor. Mr Hogan had been 31 years in Moree.]
