CASUALTIES.

John Henry Dean (33). married, with six children, a resident of Mercer, was shot while duck shooting on the Whangamarino River. He was placing decoys in position, when his gun was accidentally and he was shot through the heart, dfcath being instantaneous. Ellen Jones, aged 39, living near Riwakay shot herself with a Winchester rifle. Deceased resided with her husband, and leaves four children, aged from 17 to 4 yearn. The family formerly resided at Reefton. Two fatalities ot a similar character occurred in the Whangarei district on the sth. Richard Dose, a young man, lost his life by a fall of gravel in a quarry at Maungakaramea, the owner of the property having his wrist broken. At the same time another young man named Alexander Usher was killed by a fall of stone at the Whangarei County Council’s quarry at Whareora. Two other workers, H. and C. Ak*ust, each suffered a broken leg and minor injuries. Joseph Turner, aged 21, single," was killed on the sth on a sawmill tramline near Pirongia through a log falling from the trolley. Deceased was crushed, death being instantaneous. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death wlas returned. A collision Occurred on Friday at the Frederick street railway crossing between the 1.15 p.m. train to Port Chalmers and a motor lorry belonging to Messrs Steven, and Co., floumiillers. The engine struck i-e rear of the lorry and carried it a short distance, until the cow-catcher became jammed beneath it. The line was blocked until 2 o’clock, by which time the lorry and the engine had been freed. A fresh engine was coupled to the train, and the lorry was taken away to a garage for repairs. The crossing is an outlet to the Pelichet Bay yards. There is no crossingkeeper, but a fair view of the lihe is obtainable. The driver of the lorry, a man named David Alunro, had a remarkable escape without injury.
