DRAUGHTS TOURNAMENT

CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY. ' The handicap tournament of the New Zealand Draughts Association was completed at the Y.M.C.A. Hall on Thursday, 20th ult , leaving Messrs Boreham, Brown, Lucas, and Rea in the championship. The championship is conducted on the two-life system. In the first- round on the 21st Boieham met Rea and Lucas met Brown, and Lucas and Boreham were the winners, in the second round Lucas beat Boreham witn two wins and a draw. In the same round Brown and Rea proved to be extraordinarily evenly matched, and so far. after four sittings (eight games), their scores were even —one wm eac-h and six < I raws. The Australasian Draughts Championship was continued in the Y*M.C.A. Assembly Hall on Monday, when great interest was taken in the games. In the first round, the games between Boreham and Rea, and Brown and Lucas were continued, and resulted:—Boreham, 1 win; Rea., 3 draws, no wins; Brown, no wins, 3 draws; Lucas, 1 win. , , ~ , In the second round play was continued between the same competitors, and resulted as follows:—Boreham, no wins, one draw; Lucas, two wins; Brown, one win, 10 draws; Rea, one win. Rea balloted out. After 10 games, if players are still equal, a ballot is taken. In this case, the first on record in New Zealand. Brown was successful. In the third round Boreham and Brown met, Boreham winning one game, and drawing with Brown in the second. Play, which was stopped yesterday, will be resumed this morning LUCAS WINS AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP. The championship tournament of the New Zealand Draughts Association was concluded on the 26th. The final round between Boreham and Lucas was well contested. In the final game Lucas secured an advantage, maintaining it to the end, and thus winning the coveted Australasian Championship. The final scores in the championship were as follows: —Third round : Boreham. 1 win 1 draw; Brown, 1 win. Brown retired. Final: Lucas. 1 win, 3 draws; Boreham, no wins. Mr Lucas, who is a Dunedin player, has been connected with the game for many years, and is generally considered to ho a,' front-rank player. Pie won the New Zealand Championship in 1903, and was second is the following tournament at Oamaru. Mr Boreham is also an old hand at the game, and has been New Zealand champion on several occasions. In 1910 he won the Australasian Championship at Brisbane, and it has remained in New Zealand ever since. The arrangements for the tournament, which were in the hands of Mr 11.
