THE LATE HON. GEOGRE JONES.
OAMA.RU, April 30. A largely attended meeting of represen tative citizens convened by the Mayor was held last night. It was decided te : erect a memorial in recognition of the invaluable civic and national services rendered by the late H’on. George Jones, M.L.U.. and late proprietor of th e Oamaru Mail. The meeting was fully representative of all shades of opinion. The memorial will take the form of a beautifully designed stone arch, suitably inscribed, erected on a municipal section /in rhe main thoroughfare, now in the hands of tiie Oamaru Beautifying Society.
Some idea of the number of New Zealand dead in the great war may be got from a remark of General Richardson at Petone the other day. “If those men were in column of fours and marching past,” he said, “it would take over three hours far them to go by.”
