Trouble has arisen in connection with the rate of pay to men recently put on railway construction works at Waihi. It is stated that the men were informed when engaged that their wages would be 14s a day, but the department has since advised that 12s a day would he paid. The Mayor (Air Donaldson) wired, protesting to the Minister, who replied that, he had never indicated that 14s a day would be paid; arid only consented to provide relief work at the current rates of relief pay, which are 10s for single and 12s for married men. He could not see his way to vary this decision. The Alayor is communicating more fully in regard to the matter with Mr Coates.
