Since the establishment of the Waihi School of Mines in 1897 the majority of the Government certificates in connection with gold mining has been obtained by Waihi students, the figures being:—First class metal mine managers 48, battery superintendents 59. winding engine drivers (steam) 25, electrical 40, bullion assayers (Customs Department) 28. In addition five first class coal mine managers’ certificates and a number of second class certificates have also been obtained.
