On Thursday (Anniversary Day) an Otago representative team paid a visit to Oamaru tor the purpose of plavmg a match against a team from the North Otago Association. The various games were very closely contested, and it was soon apparent that tiie standard of play in Oamaru has undergone a marked improvement and that there are several players there whose claims to inclusion in future Otago teams will merit the fullest consideration. Glanville was undoubtedly the best of the North Otago men, and his defeat of M'Don gall was a very meritorious performance, even although the Dunedin player was not quite at his best. In the mixed doubles game in which Glanville and his partner defeated Brown and Miss APLaren he also played fine tennis, and knocked anything loose clean off the court. His partner, too, played a fine steady game. Mollison is another player who has shown a great improvement:. and Martin promises to develop a capacity for the game above the average. Of the Oamaru ladies, Miss B. Miller gave a very impressive display, and although she lost to Miss APLaren by one game, she was actually playing quite as good tennis as her opponent. She has a remarkably fine backhand; in fact, it is pro-

bably stronger than her forehand, and her game all round is very sound. She led Miss M’Laren 7—2 and 8—6,8—6, but finally lost 8—9.8—9. The detailed scores are as follow: —

WORLD'S CHAMPION. TILDEN WILL NOT DEFEND TITLE. NEW YORK, March 24. The United States Lawn Tennis Association announces that Tilden will not defend his title of world’s champion at Wimbledon next summer. The reason assigned is the heavy expense involved in sending a leading American player abroad and the effect of such a trip on the player. The association added that Tilden was willing to go, but in view of the sharp Davis Cup contest anticipated in America, and the fact that Tilden returned in bad condition from last year's trip to England, it was considered best that he should remain in the United States.
