PUBLIC SERVICE DISMISSALS
CHARGE AGAINST COMMISSIONER. COMPLETE WITHDRAWAL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, January 24. In the House of Representatives to-day Air R. A. Wright (Wellington Suburb* withdrew a statement that he made some days ago to the effect that men had been dismissed flora the public service on account of their religious convictions. “In Committee of the House on January 13.” said Mr Wright, “I made a statement, the effect of which was to charge the Assistant Public Service Commissioner with “being actuated by bias of a special nature in the selection of public servants for retrenchment. I made that statement upon information which had been supplied to me, and the accuracy of which I had no reason to doubt, but when that accuracy was questioned by the Prime Alinister and some hon. merybers I proceeded to make further inquiry. As a result I have found that the information in reliance of which I spoke in the House "was incorrect. In my judgment there is no valid ground for the accusation of prejudice which my statement conveyed. It only remains for me to express to the House and to the gentleman Whose conduct was impugned my sincere regret that the statements should have been made.”
