TRAIN DISASTER.
HEAVY CASUALTY LIST. PARIS, October 5. Two local trains collided in the Baticnolles tunnel near Paris. Fifteen persons are known to have been killed and more than 100 injured. Ihe gas reservoirs beneath the carriages exploded, causing the coaches to take fire, and the tunnel became an inferno, filled with smoke and flames. It is believed that there are many more dead beneath the burn ing debris. Firemen made frantic attempts to reach the injured, and were afraid to pump water into the blazing tunnel lest they should drown the maimed victims. For more than an hour thev could only leave the fire to burn itself out. Masks were ultimately secured, enabling the firemen to enter the tunnel and extinguish the flames. The disaster was caused hv the first train being held up by a broken coupling, and the second train following ran into it. Seventy-five injured persons have been recovered, but many are missing. There were more than 500 passengers on the trains, principally workers proceeding to their homes. PARTS, October 6. The latest estimate shows that 25 persons were killed and 150 injured in the Batin nolle;- railway accident.
